Meet Camaal Moten
B.F.A. in Visual Communication

Backing It Up

Even though Camaal Moten didn’t have a Bachelor’s degree a few years ago, he had taught himself much of what B.F.A. graduates know. Employers didn’t care how much Camaal knew though; most of the positions he applied for required a four-year degree. Period. End of story. Camaal did have an Associate’s degree in computer animation from another school, but that wasn’t getting him anywhere but frustrated.

“It seemed like all the positions I was applying for required a Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or the equivalent. I had taught myself how to do much of the stuff, but didn’t have the credentials to back it up. Finally I got to the point where I told myself, ‘This is silly. Just go and get the degree.’”

By getting his B.F.A. in Visual Communication with a concentration in Graphic Design from American InterContinental University in Buckhead, Camaal is learning that knowledge isn’t just about what he can get from books. “I’m getting the chance to learn about the profession from an insider’s perspective. Teachers here work in the field and know what it’s really like. They tell us stuff we can’t get in books or by fooling around ourselves.”

Camaal also likes how career-focused AIU is. “The classes here are just like at the other school I attended in terms of having good equipment and industry-current software to use, but at the other school it didn’t seem the teachers were as concerned with students starting their career as the teachers here at AIU are. At AIU the teachers focus on us understanding and being able to apply what we’re learning rather than just knowing enough to complete assignments.”

Sounds like Camaal will have a lot more to say at his next interview than, “Yes, I do have a Bachelor’s degree.”
